A highly opportunistic pathogen that preys on the sick, elderly and immunocompromised. Drug-resistant strains are associated with high death rates and major outbreaks.

Good hand hygiene, infection-control practices, hygiene management, careful device management and responsible antibiotic use are the best defences.
