Causes diarrhoea, food poisoning, urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections and, in severe cases, kidney failure.

Normally lives in the intestines of humans and animals, but can also turn up in food, water and places contaminated with
faecal matter.

Most strains are harmless helpers as indicators of water contamination, but the wrong strain in the wrong place can make people seriously ill. Some are increasingly antibiotic-resistant.

Wash hands thoroughly, prepare food safely, avoid faecal contamination, drink safe water, practice responsible infection
control and antibiotic use.
